Can you believe we’re already halfway through our 12 Steps of Building a Home?! We sure can’t. If you’ve missed the previous steps in this series, don’t worry, you can find all of them below.

First off, here’s a fun fact you may not know yet: Sheetrock is actually a brand name! It’s also known as drywall and it’s crucial to your home build. Choosing the right drywall can actually be a bit complicated, but we’re here to make the process as simple as possible. Good drywall needs to be a few things:

FIRE RESISTANT

Each municipality has different requirements for where “Type X,” the most fireproof drywall, must be used. It’s most commonly required for garage walls, stairwells, and for ceilings between living spaces.

RESISTANT TO MOLD AND MILDEW

This type of drywall is also known as green board. Without getting too detailed, this style is treated differently and is ideal for damp and wet locations, such as behind tiles in bathroom walls or in kitchens.

This is obviously a very basic crash course into sheetrock, but don’t worry, the pros will help guide you to the right kind for each part of your home.

Once your house has been properly taped and mudded (the technical term for how drywall is kept in place) we can move on to more fun – paint, doors, and lighting!

We’ve previously published blog posts on two of our favorite neutral paint colors, black and white.  Click the buttons below to see each post. And yes, we truly believe black is a perfect neutral-colored paint and can be used in any room of your house!

After we get your walls painted and doors in place, we can start placing light fixtures. We’ll do a deeper dive into lighting later in the year. For now, take a look through this list of some of our favorite pendant lights.

Hopefully this quick look into all things walls has been helpful! We hope you’ll stick around for next month’s topic, floors.
