How to Perfectly Light Your Home
We are officially one month away from closing out our 12 Steps of Building a Home series! This month we are covering the unsung hero of interior design — lighting.
introduction
Lighting transforms spaces from blank rooms to warm and inviting spaces. Today we're going to share our guide to layering light and where to install different types of lighting. Let’s dive in!
layering light
The first step to perfectly lighting a home is understanding the three types of lighting. Those types are ambient, task, and accent.
Ambient lighting sets the overall mood for a room. This light usually comes from chandeliers, pendant lights, scones, or recessed lights. Ambient light should be evenly spaced in order to provide balanced, welcoming light.
Task lighting gives more localized light for activities like reading, cooking, or working. Under cabinet lights, table-top lamps, and standing lamps are all examples of task lighting.
Accent lighting highlights architectural features, artwork, or other areas of your home that you want to illuminate for design purposes. This lighting is non-functional but provides added warmth to your home. Add accent lighting with track lighting or wall-mounted fixtures.
how to place lighting
We follow a few basic rules when it comes to placing lighting:
Chandeliers should mirror the scale of the room in which they are placed.
Pendant lights should be hung 30-36 inches above the counter or table the light.
Sconces should be placed 5 to 6 feet above the floor. This same rule applies when sconces are placed above staircases.
Recessed lighting should be evenly spaced from one another and from the walls.
Layering light well helps make your home look and feel more comfortable. It's also important to choose the right bulbs to keep your home from looking like an industrial building. LED bulbs between 2500 and 3000 kelvins (often labeled “warm white”) will keep those pesky blue lights out of your living spaces.
