Cabinetry | 12 Steps of Building a Home

Today we’re going to teach you how to select the right cabinetry for your style and needs. We’re going to cover paint, wood, cabinet style, and even kitchen hoods. Let’s dive in!

introduction

As you’re building your dream home, cabinetry might not be at the top of your list of design decisions to consider. But we’re here to tell you, it should be! The right cabinets can transform your kitchen, laundry room, or bathroom from just a room to a place of elegance and efficiency.

paint + wood

The color and material of wood you choose for your cabinets will set an ambiance for your entire room, and therefore your house! Cabinets are generally made from oak, maple, cherry, or walnut wood. Each varies a bit in their grain pattern, and we truthfully love them all. Natural wood finishes will add warmth to a room.

If you do decide to paint your wood cabinets, the color you choose will also add to the overall feeling in your home. Whites and creams are a timeless, neutral look. Bolder colors, such as dark green, will express your personal style. No matter what wood tone or paint color you choose, we’re here to help you make the best decision for your personal style!

cabinet faces

There are two main styles of cabinet styles, American Face Frame and European Frameless. You’ve certainly seen both styles in your life, but we’ll explain a little more about them so you can understand and decide which you prefer.

  • Face Frame | As the name implies, this style of cabinetry has a frame around the front edges of the cabinet. This frame is usually ¾” thick and can be 1 ½ - 3” wide.

  • European Frameless | This is a full-access cabinet, meaning the entire space is available for storage once the cabinet door has been opened.

Once you know what type of frame you’d like, you can select a door style. These include Shaker, recessed or raised panel, flat, glass panel, or bead board. Each of these styles is beautiful and an elegant combination will show off your personal style and complement your home’s overall aesthetic.

KITCHEN HOODS

Now lets chat about the real showstopper of any well-designed kitchen, the hood. A range hood is not only functional (helps remove cooking odors and smoke), but it can and should be beautiful!

When selecting a hood, it’s important to make sure it fits well with your kitchen’s overall theme. Sometimes in our builds a client will have an idea for a hood first and we’ll select the rest of the cabinetry off of that. Other times a client may have little preference for their kitchen hood and we present them with some options that fit well with their home.

If your style is more rustic or traditional, a copper or brass hood can add visual interest among your cabinetry. Stainless steel hoods lend themselves well to a modern home. Of course, a hood cabinet can  always be built to suit your personal style and kitchen needs.

Cabinetry is a necessary funcation in our homes, but it doesn’t need to be boring! Let your personal style show through in your cabinet material, color, and frame. You deserve to have cabinets you love to use and look at for years to come.
