Exterior Design | 12 Steps of Building a Home

Hello again, everybody! Thanks for all of the support you’ve given us over on social media for the 12 Steps of Building a Home series we’ve started. If you aren’t already, please give us a follow on Instagram. We are sharing so many helpful tips over there throughout the month and you don’t want to miss out!

This month we’re digging into Exterior Design. The possibilities can be endless, but as a full-service design firm, we are dedicated to making your experience as simple as possible! Today I’m going to take you through a few key topics we’ll cover when designing the exterior of your house.

FIRST STEPS

The first thing we’ll discuss when designing a new home is obviously what materials we’ll use. Are you looking for stone? Stucco? Siding? What about roof material, are you a cedar shingles fan? Slate? Like I said, the possibilities are endless. But we are well versed in every material imaginable and we can help you pick the best options for your personal style and home location!

I’m going to go through a few of our favorite, tried-and-true materials today to give you a better idea of what will work well for your specific project. Keep in mind that not all materials do well in all environments, but we’ll make sure what goes on your home will last for decades to come!

STUCCO

Stucco is an incredibly old home exterior material, and for good reason! It has been used on homes for literally thousands of years, and it’s easy to see why. This material is incredibly durable, and can withstand even the harshest weather conditions with very little maintenance. It’s a very popular home material in the Western United States because it endures long days of sun and snow incredibly well. It is important to note that the up-front cost is higher than what you’d pay for another material (say vinyl siding), but we believe the results are well worth the investment.

STONE

Stone is another very timeless option for the exterior of your house. Natural stone doesn’t require repainting, like wood siding might, and it is incredible at retaining heat (a bonus for snowy northern Utah winters!). Of course natural stone is a pretty broad category; it can include everything from granite to sandstone to limestone. We work closely with your general contractor when working on your new home build, so you can rest assured that the materials we work with will be handled with care and installed perfectly.

WOOD

Wood is another really popular siding material, but it does come with a unique set of challenges. If you have your heart set on a traditional wood siding, wonderful! We can’t wait to make your new build dreams come true. But we always like to prepare our clients to know that choosing wood will require more maintenance on your part to keep it looking pristine. Termites and ants are big fans of wood, too, and you’ll need to put in a little bit of effort to keep them at bay. But many people feel the effort is well worth it and we don’t disagree – wood will make your home look classic and timeless.

THEN WHAT?

We take your preferences to your contractor team. From there we’ll all work together to finish selecting exterior finishes, from roofing materials, soffits, fascia, and more! Every single inch of the exterior of your home will be well thought out and designed to last a lifetime.
