5 Tips to Organize Your Home

Is there anything better than having a place for everything in your home and knowing where everything is at all times? Scotch tape? It's right here. Umbrella? In that closet. Your child's favorite stuffed animal that they CANNOT sleep without? Well, that's always going to be lost no matter how organized you are. Here are 5 tips to get your home organized so everything is tidy, in its place, and you have a system to always know where everything goes.

TIP 1: GO THROUGH YOUR INVENTORY

First things first, you need to figure out what you actually have in your home that needs to be organized. Go through each room in your house, and yes, that means the basement closet that you are afraid to open the doors of because everything might come tumbling out on you. In fact, you should probably start there. Grab a paper and pen and as you go from room to room, take notes of things you need, things that are meaningful to you that you want to keep, and then note the things you have multiples of or no use for anymore.

TIP 2: KEEP ONLY WHAT YOU NEED

You don't need four staplers. I PROMISE! One of the keys to having an organized home is minimizing what you have in your home to keep organized. After you have taken an inventory of your home, go back through and throw away, sell, or donate the things you don't need. These can be things you have multiples of or things you no longer use. Our rule of thumb is that if you haven't needed or used the item in the last year, you can probably get rid of it. Keep in mind that “need” can also apply to things that are special or sentimental to you that you may not necessarily use, but that bring you joy and you want to keep in your home.

TIP 3: GIVE EVERYTHING A HOME

Now that you only have one stapler, it is so much easier to find a place, or as we like to say, a home for it. Everything in your house should have a specific place it goes so that you always know where to put it, and even better, where to find it when you need it. Be thoughtful and deliberate about where you are going to place things in your home, rather than just shoving an item in the back of a drawer or closet.

TIP 4: CREATE A SYSTEM

There is no right way to organize a home, so you need to find a system that makes sense for your home and works best for you. But if you aren't sure where to start, try thinking of every closet and drawer in your house as a category and start from there. For example, a drawer in your kitchen can be your “Office Goods” drawer or a closet in your basement can be the “Linens and Blankets” closet. This will help you determine how to organize the items in your home and give everything a systematic and organized place to go.

TIP 5: LABEL EVERYTHING

AND WE MEAN EVERYTHING! Labels are our favorite here at Liz Powell Design. They are the "cherry on top" of an organized home. They help everyone in your home know where things go and where to find things, which helps your home stay organized if everyone knows what's going on. You don't even have to have a fancy label machine. Grab some tape and a sharpie and label away!

There you have it, our 5 tips to get your home organized. Think of this new year as a new beginning for your home and give it a refresh with these organizing tips. We promise you and your house will thank us.
