5 Tips for Creating a Peaceful Bedroom

Your Bedroom is where you begin and end of each day. It’s worth investing some time and energy on creating an atmosphere that encourages peace and calm. It’s time to rejuvenate your bedroom. Here are 5 tips on how to get started.

#1 Clear the Clutter

I am guilty of trying to use my bedroom as a gym and home office. In my experience it does not create a relaxing environment. If the purpose of the bedroom is for rest and relaxation then it’s time to clear out anything that doesn’t support that. Clearing out clutter will encourage you to treat the bedroom as a single-purpose room. Clearing clutter doesn’t mean become a minimalist and get rid of stuff. It means clear the visual clutter. Perhaps you need to rethink storage solutions, placement of laundry hampers so there is an easier and better flow for where clutter goes. Keep the space feeling calm and minimal so you can get a good night's rest.

#2 Calming Colour Palette

To create a calming environment we need to choose color shades that are neutral or natural. Cool shades can bring down your heart rate and blood pressure. Neutral color palette includes, beiges, light grays, and creams. Big bold colors and big bold patterns have a place, but maybe not in a bedroom that’s sole purpose is for rest and relaxation.

#3 Inviting Bed Linens

After a long day of work, whether your work is at home or out of the home. Whether you’re a student, career person, or a parent;  when all of the work is done there is nothing like settling down into a nice, clean, warm cozy bed. The feel of the sheets, the weight of the blanket, the softness of the pillows, the sense of support and security that your bed is offering to you is magical. Investing in nice sheets, blankets, comforters and throws is worth it.  Adding all these layers of texture and weight gives you variety, not just visually but also functionally throughout seasonal temperature changes.

#4 Create a sitting area

Retreating to your bedroom for rest and relaxation is glorious but sometimes we aren’t quite ready to jump into bed. Likewise in the morning  we might not be  ready to leave the peacefulness of our bedroom. Create a sitting area in your bedroom. Locate the focal point and center furniture around it. This could be looking out a window or in front of a  fireplace. Position your furniture to face the focal point, for small bedrooms anchor your sitting area to the foot of the bed. You could use a cozy bench, trunk, stool, small sofa or a chaise lounge. If you have a nice nook or corner, create a clear division between the bed and the seating area. Add a plush sofa or double chair, coffee table or end table.

#5 Add a Few Lighting Options

Give yourself lighting options from task lighting to natural lighting. Create opportunities to control the amount of light  coming into the room. Similar to the layering of linens on a bed, we want to give ourselves options to adjust for the amount of light we are needing at the moment. The presence of light is one of the main disturbances of good sleep.  Layering Black out curtains with sheers gives you options. In the evening you might want to block out the neighbors' back porch lights or a street lamp, but in the morning you may want to see the sunrise. If you love reading in bed like I do, then a good task lamp is necessary. Installing dimmers on canned lighting can help create a mood as you begin to settle down for the night.

Creating a peaceful bedroom is achievable with a little forethought. This is true for anyspace you are thinking of rejuvenating. Decide how you want to feel in the space. Remove clutter, choose the correct colour palette, use linens and accessories to inform the purpose of the space, use furniture to also inform the use of the space, and give yourself the correct lighting for the tasks that will be performed. Everything in your bedroom needs to be a helpful reminder to you that this is where you will rest and feel peace!

Enjoy, rest, relax in your new peaceful bedroom!
