Tips for Choosing a Home Color Palette

If you were to open your closet right now, what colors would you see?

Most people will find that they’re drawn to certain colors in their day-to-day fashion, which is reflected in the colors of your closet. These colors are an outward expression of your personality or your preferences.

You might be someone whose closet is filled with bright and powerful colors, meaning you like to stand out or portray a bright and cheery visage. The bold colors make you feel alive and seen.

In contrast, you might have a friend who gravitates to neutrals and muted tones with fewer pops of color. This might indicate you like blending in and feeling comfortable over making a statement with your presence.

When it comes to choosing a color palette for your home, paying attention to your clothing color choices can be an indication of where you should start.

DISCOVERING YOUR COLOR PALETTE

Most likely, if you love a color on you, you’re going to love it in your home. Color is an excellent way to bring personality into a home as your home interior is often a reflection of your disposition. Color in your home can also influence how you feel. We can all agree, though, that your home will feel the most serene when it reflects who you are. After all the time and effort you’ve put into your home design, you want to make sure it feels like “yours”.

Another way you can determine the best color palette for your home is to consider the architectural design of your home. Is there a specific element you know you want to feature or that will draw the eye when guests enter the home? Maybe you have your heart set on a certain piece of furniture or decor. Consider the color of these focus pieces and build your color palette around them, in an style that suits the architecture of your home.

In one of our latest new build designs, dubbed internally the Teal Cottage home, you’ll see that the owners opted for a real show-stopping fireplace with teal ceramic tile, which we were able to use as a jumping off point for building the rest of the home’s color palette.

CONSIDER THE COLOR WHEEL

Another consideration you might find helpful when selecting a color palette for your home is to utilize the color wheel. Many home builders aren’t experts on color theory, which allows the opportunity for fresh eyes and a new audience if they were to learn and implement it on their own.

Basically, if you’re just starting out and not super familiar with color, you’ll want to look for analogous colors. Analogous colors are groups of colors close together on the color wheel, and they’re going to feel comfortable and relaxing when you see them paired together, meaning they work well for home color palettes.

To create a balanced color scheme, we recommend choosing one dominant color and then selecting accent furnishings in the colors near it on the color wheel.

Remember, your home is an expression of your personality, and you want that personality to be present throughout the entire home!

A few other quick tips as you begin implementing a color palette for your new home:

  • Don’t avoid color in small spaces. Some thing that spaces might be too small to merit color, but using all white or another light neutral color make make a small space seem even smaller. Our recommendation for a small room like a powder bath or a desk nook is to try something a little bolder, like a deep, rich color or a patterned colorful wallpaper.

  • Be sure to carry your color palette throughout the entire home. Accent pieces placed strategically throughout the house in the same color scheme can help the entire home feel more cohesive and visually appealing.

  • When using lots of a single color, search for both warm and cool tones of that color that work well together to avoid a space looking too stark or high-contrast. Including healthy doses of analogous colors will help balance things out visually
