Five Styling Tips for Any Home

Clients hire me to write their biographies, but instead of words, I use stone, wood, fabric, and personal items. — Liz Powell

Designing your house to feel more like a home and less like a showroom or clutter cave can feel a bit overwhelming at times. I find it’s easier to sit back and focus on small spaces at a time and to take things slow. You don’t need a big home makeover over a single weekend — in fact, designing your home can be so much more fun if you take it slow enough to enjoy the process as you learn about new resources and discover new pieces and styles that appeal to you.

Today, I wanted to share a tip (or five!) that I often share with clients and my audience, or anyone who asks me for advice as they begin to style their house into something that feels more like them. I sometimes feel like a broken record for speaking these tips so frequently, but that’s because they hold true! I’m all about creating timeless spaces, and these timeless tips will help you achieve just that in your own home:

01 | Bring in nature!

Just because you’re inside doesn’t mean everything needs to be man-made and factory-produced — consider adding some organic elements to your decor to make a space feel more inviting. I honestly believe that plants always make a space better. They feel fresh and bring the space to life.

02 | Blend old with new.

As you begin your home design journey, you should begin with the mindset that not everything has to go. And when you do bring in stuff that’s new to you, it doesn’t need to be new to the world, either — old things paired with new add a “real life” element to the room, helping it feel inviting. A room decorated with only old things will make it feel, well, old and outdated. And, as I like to say, a room with only new things feels like the room has no soul!

03 | Don’t be afraid to try new things.

Use this opportunity to play with different shapes and textures. You never know what you don’t like until you at least try it out. If you’re ordering pieces online, check return policies and then over-order in different colors, shapes, and fabrics so you can see what fits perfectly. As I said before, this shouldn’t feel like a race to get the room “perfect”. In fact, it’s totally fine to never have a completely “finished” room! Textures that didn’t appeal to you when you first moved in or furnished your home might work for you now and practice makes perfect when it comes to pairing textures!

04 | Function first.

It’s important to remember the function of the room. After all, you’re living in your home, and your room design needs to work for you and your family! But that being said, you might as well make that function beautiful. Find a nice storage bench to house all the mudroom clutter, or a gorgeous basket with a lid to keep your dirty clothes in, or for your multi-colored throws in your living room.

05 | Allow spaces to breathe.

One of the biggest mistakes I see most often is people overdoing it with the decorations in their rooms. They’re trying their best to make the home feel like them, but when a space is so full, nothing feels special. I am always reminding clients that less is more. You don’t have to live in bare-bones, but make sure the things you’re bringing into your home are things you love and things that serve a purpose, and all will feel right.
