4 Ways to Use Storytelling to Create a More Cohesive Home

Have you ever read a truly remarkable book? Some of my favorite books make me feel like I’m living the story along with the characters. They catch my attention, work through plot points well, and tell a unique story.

We like to think that designing a house is a lot like writing and publishing a great book. Today we’re going to chat through five ways to use elements of storytelling to create a more cohesive home.

step 1 | Pitch Your story

Just like an author wouldn’t publish their story with an editor they dislike, you shouldn’t build your home with a team you don’t trust. Your home is a huge investment, and you deserve to be proud of the final product.

Our team values getting to know our clients personally before we design a home. We consider each family’s unique needs and how they’ll use their home. We like to understand how many children you have, how old they are, any other family members who may live with you, and so much more. We all get to know one another well, which helps us design the best house for you and helps you feel confident that we’ll build your house well.

STEP 2 | JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER

It’s hard to admit, but we all make snap judgments. Whether it’s picking a book off the shelf at your favorite bookstore or pulling up to a new friend’s home, what we see gives us a first impression that can be hard to change.

Our architecturally driven designs ensure your home will give a lovely first impression for years to come. We incorporate timeless elements in durable materials so your home’s exterior will continue looking beautiful and new long after you’ve moved in. We work with landscape designers to install lovely, native plants that will thrive under your care.

STEP 3 | Hook your audience

Every well-written book has a hook that makes you want to keep reading. Think of a first chapter that starts with a tense moment or a scene narrated by an unnamed character. Just like those tropes will set the tone for the rest of a book, the design of your foyer will set the tone for your entire home.

We like designing foyers where guests can feel comforted and welcomed. We love using benches for seating while removing shoes, coat racks, or trays to hold keys. A mirror, a beautifully framed art piece, and sconces bring additional character into your foyer. Foyers don’t need to be overlooked rooms in your house. Let them have their moment in the sun!

STEP 4 | Develop the plot

Interesting books have a well-structured plot that keeps your attention. Well-designed homes have thoughtful elements throughout the home that support the overall design.

We help you select flooring, fixtures, floor plans, and paint that all support the message you want to send with your home. Every element will tie back to your home’s overall architecture and will flow together well.

By staying on theme, your home will look cohesive and “read” well. No one room will stand out more than the others or seem like it’s meant to be in a different house. And much like you’ll want to share your favorite book with all your friends, we know you’ll want to gather everyone you love in a home we design with you.
