Inspiring Tablescapes: 4 Tips to Creating Your Own Tablescape This Holiday Season

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year...”

October to February is hands down the best time of year, if you like gathering with friends and family around a large dinner table and sharing yummy, delicious food then you know what I am talking about. After the busy warm Summer months, it’s time to slow down and cozy up with loved ones around a large table. I have always loved the beautiful attention to detail displayed at the dinner tables.

Atmosphere is everything! It can change the entire mood of the evening. Weary traveling guests can feel loved and have a sense of calm with the warm glow of candles scattered across the table and the aroma of pine, sage, and dried orange peels. Make it cozy so friends and family never want to leave.

Using a few simple tricks we can help you achieve a beautiful timeless tablescape for your holiday dinner party!

#1 Simplify Your Color Palette

Creating an atmosphere takes intention. How do you want your guests to feel when they sit at your table?

How do you want to feel in your own home as guests arrive? Sometimes these holiday gatherings can be stressful. I like to have my table set the day before so I can set the mood for myself as I prepare for the event.

Using a simple color palette can help create a sense of calm. Try using shades of white for the table setting, plates, napkins, placemats. Use textures as you layer those pieces on top of each other. Rain and Pine created the beautiful holiday tablescape above using a very simplified color palette.

“Cheerfulness is the atmosphere in which all things thrive.”

#2 Non-Traditional Choices

We all know the traditional, very recognizable colors of the holiday we are celebrating. Try going a few shades lighter or a few shades darker than the traditional red, green, pumpkin orange, valentine red. Have some fun with your palette. Jojotastic did a beautiful job creating a very non-traditional table. This tablescape could be used for multiple holidays. We love its versatility.

#3 Let it Shine

Let it shine, yes keep it simple but bring on the sparkle. You can use candles, votives, pillars, tapers, shimmer and metallics to add some sparkle and shine. Adding just a little sparkle can add another interesting layer to your tablescape. It’s like adding a simple piece of jewelry when you’re wearing a t-shirt and jeans. It elevates the entire look. Depending on the look and feel of your event, you can add as much or as little Shine as you would like, just go back to your intention and the mood you are trying to create.

#4 Bring the Outside In

The most budget friendly way to decorate is to look outside and bring nature in. Depending on where you live and what your world has to offer in a certain season will of course impact your tablescape. You can also go to a local florist or nursery to see if they have dried flowers, pine cones, sage leaves, pompous grass etc. Our Local go-to in Cache Valley, UT is Freckle Farm. They have the most beautiful dried and live plants for creating gorgeous holiday tablescapes.

Tablescapes are so fun to create, if you haven’t tackled a tablescape on your own we encourage you to give it a try this holiday season. No matter your budget you can accomplish a lovely table setting that will let your guests know how much you care for them. Happy tablescaping!
