Finishing Your Home | 12 Steps of Building a Home

This is the final month of our 12 Steps of Building a Home series! And it honestly might be our favorite topic of all. Today we’ll discuss final home decor, furnishings, and window treatments.

space planning

The first step to finishing your home is planning how to use each space. We’ll have planned out the general use during our pre-build planning sessions, but it’s a lot easier to map out where furnishings should go once you’re in your house.

Consider whether rooms will be used primarily for socializing (living and dining rooms), work (offices), storage (closets and pantries), or personal use (bedrooms and bathrooms). It’s important to keep the primary use of a room in mind when laying out the furnishings. This will help you know how highly trafficked and used each space will be and what sort of storage each room will require.

a tip:

Be sure to leave appropriately wide walkways in rooms for socializing, along with storage for comforts like blankets or extra pillows.

selecting furniture

This really might be our favorite part of finishing a home! A completed empty house is one thing but a fully furnished home is an excitement all its own.

Everybody has their preferences for furniture softness, color, and material. But no matter what your style is, it’s important to keep the scale of your room in mind when selecting furniture. Sofas, chairs, tables, and storage should be well-sized for each room in your house.

window treatments

Blinds and curtains have the power to transform your room and are an excellent way to show off your style.  You’ll want to ask the following questions about each room in your house:

  • Which direction do these windows face?

  • Do I need more privacy in this room or will sheer window coverings suffice?

Windows with southern exposure will let in more light and warmth, so windows facing that direction may need heavier blinds or curtains. We like outfitting bedrooms with blackout shades to keep out unwanted light at bedtime.

We recommend you put curtains as high and wide as they can go over windows. It adds a touch of drama and elegance to any room. Shades of white blinds and curtains will add additional light to your home, while darker tones can show off your style well.

final touches

We believe that a home should reflect the people who live there. Including favorite art prints, beloved travel souvenirs, and family photos is an excellent way to liven up your rooms in the most personal way possible.

Now, by no means does this mean you can’t add home accessories from the store to your house! We know there are so many lovely decor pieces on the market today and they too can bring style to your home. But by finding a good balance between something old and something new you can make your home beautiful and unique.

Decor items look great in groups of three, especially when items are of varying heights. Choosing items of different textures and sizes will add additional interest and coziness.
